Teak Oil

About Teak Oil

Our Teak Oil is formulated using a traditional recipe of pure, high quality Tung and Linseed Oil so is completely safe and non-toxic. This blend of oils allows the Teak Oil to not only restore the natural beauty of grey, old and weathered teak garden furniture, but it will also protect and waterproof other exotic wood and hardwoods.

Our clear Teak Oil can be used to seal and protect unfinished or bare wood and also to maintain wood on an ongoing basis. Ideal for garden furniture; treating your furniture with Teak Oil will help prevent it from weathering as it holds UV protection agents which slow down the greying process of not just teak, but all other interior, and exterior wood. If this has happened to your garden furniture already, you can use our Garden Furniture Restoration Kit to restore the attractive honey colour to the teak.

Using Teak Oil from the day you purchase your teak will help the wood stay in better condition for longer.

How to use Teak Oil

If you want to restore old, grey and weathered teak garden furniture you should use our Garden Furniture Restoration Kit.

Clean first before applying Teak Oil

Before applying the Teak Oil ensure the surface is dry, clean and dust free.

Indoor wood: Use our Wood Cleaner to remove any dirt and grime.

Outdoor wood: Use our Teak Cleaner to remove any dirt and grime. The Teak Cleaner will also help to restore the colour if the wood is looking grey.

If there are any old residues of finish, varnish, or wax on the wood wipe it down with White Spirit to remove these.

Applying Teak Oil

Shake the bottle well, before use. If you are unsure of the finish, test it on an unseen area first.

Apply the Teak Oil liberally to a Lint Free Cloth and rub into the wood following the direction of the grain. Leave for a few minutes then wipe off any excess. Leave the Teak Oil to thoroughly soak in and dry for between 4-6 hours.

Bare Wood: If you are applying Teak Oil to bare wood for the first time, you’ll need to apply three coats. Wait until the first coat has thoroughly dried (4-6 hours) before applying the second coat of Teak Oil.

Maintaining Wood with Teak Oil

For maintenance of new or used items, simply reoiling once a year is sufficient for all year round protection. Further coats can be applied to high use areas, if required.

FAQ - Using Teak Oil

Q. Should I be using Teak Oil for garden furniture?

A. Yes, out of the various wood oils available, Teak Oil is the best for garden furniture. Not only does it help keep the wood nourished and protected but it will also help to stop the wood from fading and discolouring.

Q. Does Teak Oil stain wood?

A. No, it is not a wood stain. However, it will help to restore the honey colour look Teak should have. Restoring this colour completely can be achieved using our Garden Furniture Restoration Kit that contains Teak Cleaner, Teak Brightener and Teak Oil, rather than using a stain.

Q. What does the final finish look like? I’d like to know before I complete the full job.

A. Our Teak Oil leaves a nice, natural matt finish. For a better idea of the finish, take a look at some of customers' photos, or watch one of our videos showing you how to use teak oil.

We recommend testing this on some spare wood, or in an inconspicuous area before applying it directly to your project.

Q. Will Teak Oil protect wood against spillages and stains?

A. Yes. Our Teak Oil provides a great resistance to water and staining. This is why we highly recommend it for garden furniture. Once you have applied the oil and let it dry, the wood will then be fully protected from stains and spills.

Q. Is Teak Oil safe to use on wooden toys, or items used by children?

A. Yes; once dry, our Teak Oil is completely safe and compliant with Articles In Contact With Food Regulations. If you would prefer to use a 100% natural oil instead, then we would recommend using Tung Oil.

Q. How often should I oil my garden furniture?

A. For routine maintenance and all year-round protection, we recommend re-applying our Teak Oil to your garden furniture once every 12 months. One coat is sufficient for this.

The best time of year to oil your garden furniture is in spring, so that it looks its best throughout the summer season when it will get used the most. If you leave your garden furniture outside over the winter months then we would also recommend that you clean and oil the wood again in Autumn, and ideally use a furniture cover too.

Q. I have teak inside and outside my house; can it be used on both?

A. Yes, our Teak Oil is excellent for woods both indoors and out, especially for use on garden furniture.

Q. Why does teak turn grey over time?

A. Teak naturally fades from a golden-honey colour to a grey/ silver colour; this is due to weathering. The natural oils disperse as they absorb UV rays form the sun, which starts to dry the wood out and fades the colour. Some people prefer this look, however if you do not, it can be easily rectified using our Garden Furniture Restoration Kit, which contains our Teak Cleaner, Teak Brightener and Teak Oil. This kit will eliminate and kill any mould on your furniture, along with bringing back the lovely honey colour to your wood.

Q. Can I use Teak Oil on pine?

A. Yes, it's great for pine and other softwoods too. It can also be used on all hardwoods too, it's not just for teak!

Q. What is teak oil?

A. Teak Oil is a blend of oils and sometimes other chemicals that is used predominantly on garden furniture. As it isn't an 'off the shelf' oil, no two teak oils will be the same; each company will use a slightly different formulation.

When we make our teak oil, we use high quality tung oil and linseed oil.
