In this blog, we will discuss how to use a Chopping Board Oil and the benefits in doing so.

What is Chopping Board Oil

Chopping Board Oil will not only protect your wooden kitchen items from drying out, cracking and staining but will bring out the natural beauty of the wood, enhancing the grain and restoring the colour.

Our Chopping Board Oil forms a protective barrier that, with regular application, will prevent the wood from becoming dry, cracked, and brittle.

It also prevents liquid from penetrating the surface, working to reduce the proliferation of germs and bacteria, and prevents staining.

It is a food-grade, mineral oil which will never spoil - unlike many alternative treatments - making it perfect for use on items used for food preparation such as chopping boards, butcher blocks, wooden spoons and other utensils.

As well as protecting the wood and prolonging the lifespan of your chopping boards, our Chopping Board Oil enhances the grain and natural colour.

It is also extremely easy-to-use.

How to use Chopping Board Oil

Step 1. Preparing the wood

Before applying the Chopping Board Oil to the wood, it is important to properly clean the wood.

If the surface is stain-free, a clean with hot and soapy water will be adequate.

For a deeper clean and to remove any staining, we recommend using a specialist Wood Cleaner with a Sanding Pad.

Our Wood Cleaner is water-based and so totally safe to use on all types of wooden surfaces. It is suitable for gently cleaning wooden surfaces to maintain a clean appearance but can also be used with the Sanding Pad to thoroughly clean deeply ingrained dirt and stains.

Once clean, leave the wood to dry, then sand it with another Sanding Pad (but this time, without the Wood Cleaner). The second sanding will remove any original finishes applied to the wood such as an oil, wax or varnish.

Step 2. Applying the Chopping Board Oil

Apply the Cutting Board Oil over the board using a Lint Free Cloth and leave any excess to soak in overnight.

Once dry, buff the chopping board using a clean Lint Free Cloth.

Using a Lint Free Cloth will not spoil the application of the oil by leaving any unwanted loose fibres, threads and lint on the surface.

Repeat the process until you can drip a drop of water onto the wood, and it beads up on the surface and does not soak in. This is how to tell if the wood is completely protected.

Re-apply the oil once a month, or as necessary when you see that water is once again starting to be absorbed into the chopping board.

Chopping Board Conditioner

After applying the Chopping Board Oil, we recommend that you treat the wood with a Cutting Board Conditioner.

This is a wax-based product that will protect the surface of the wood and help to hide any knife marks and cuts in the surface.

Following these steps will help condition, oil and protect your chopping boards, prolonging its lifespan.
