All About Upholstery Cleaners

In this blog, we will discuss the many ways to clean upholstery, and what we would recommend.

Types of Upholstery Cleaners

There are many methods used to clean upholstery, but most aren’t suitable to carry out yourself and require a professional.

Common types of upholstery cleaner you may have heard of are:

Hot Water Extraction Cleaning - This method requires a machine that uses hot water at a high pressure to agitate the fibres and extract the dirt from upholstery.

Shampoo Cleaning - Shampoo cleaning involves applying a detergent to the surface of the upholstery and rinsing with water.

Dry Cleaning - Dry cleaning is a popular option for well-maintained carpets and upholstery as a powdered cleaning agent is simply sprinkled onto the surface and removed by vacuuming.

Most professionals will use hot water extraction, but this requires specialist machinery and so isn’t suitable for use at home.

Shampoo cleaning has its own drawbacks too as it requires a lot of water to rinse the shampoo out of the carpet, so carpets are often wet for a long period of time, which can result in mould (in addition to not being able to use the room!), but if the shampoo isn’t fully rinsed out it can attract dirt.

Dry cleaning also just doesn’t produce the level of deep clean some fabrics will need.

To help tackle the above pitfalls with these upholstery cleaning methods, we have developed our own upholstery cleaner for the DIY’er.

Our Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

This product is sprayed (by hand) onto the fabric, and then left to dwell. It works by loosening the dirt and stain particles that have latched onto fibres by microscopic vibrations, allowing them to be easily wiped off.

This unique cleaning action makes the product totally safe to use without causing any damage to the surface it is applied to as there is no need for rubbing/scrubbing.

There is also very little water used in the cleaning process so drying time is considerably reduced compared to other methods too, meaning there is less chance of mould occurring.

Unlike many of the other methods, it contains no solvents or abrasives, making it safe to use in all environments and on all fabrics.

How it can be used with the machines

To tackle hard to remove stains, our Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner can be used as a pre-treatment for other methods that have previously been mentioned by helping to reduce the time it takes to clean the upholstery, and any possible damage caused by any rubbing, brushing or scrubbing of the fibres.

How to use the Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

For general cleaning:

Spray onto the fabric so the area becomes slightly wet. Agitate the fabric using a soft bristled brush or cloth and leave it to dwell for 15 minutes. As the product dwells it will start to loosen the dirt. Blot the surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove the dirt. Rinse the cleaned area with warm water and allow to dry.

For stubborn stains:

Spray onto the stain and agitate with a soft bristled brush for a few minutes, then allow to dwell for 15 minutes. Re-wet the stained area if needed. Gently agitate the stain again for a few minutes and then blot the stain with a clean, dry cloth to remove the loosened stain particles. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and a clean cloth to remove any excess staining.
